| What do I need to hook two computers
together? |
| The best way to do this is with
a NIC or Network Interface Card installed in each computer. Once
the card is installed, all you need is a Category 5 Crossover
Ethernet cable (like a big telephone line) to connect to the NICs.
Network cards usually cost $20 or less, and the cable is about 17
cents per foot. All the software you need is built into windows.
If your planning to add more then two PC's to
the network and have the extra money now, purchase a device called
a hub. The number of ports on the hub equal the amount of PCs that
can be hooked together. If you plan to transfer a lot of data
between units, I'd recommend a 10/100mbit hub with 10/100mbit NICs.
If your really not moving that much data, you can get away with
10mbit NICs and a 10mbit hub. The price different isn't really
that much though and you'll be a lot happier coping files at 100mbit versus 10mbit.
