What Is A Driver?
A driver is a small program that acts like a translator between a device like a printer or a modem and programs that use the device. Each device has its own set of specialized commands that only its driver knows. Programs, however, communicate using standard commands. Let's say when you click on "print" in one of your programs, it generates the command Print. Now let's say the printer only understands the command Print. What happens then is:
Program says Print
Operating System sees Print and says Print
Device Driver sees Print and tells the printer Print
Printer sees Print and outputs your page.
The driver, therefore, accepts generic commands from a program and then translates them into specialized commands for the device.

Almost every device in the PC comes with its own drivers, either on a floppy disk or a cd.
Some drivers are built into Windows already and may not be required to be installed manually.
Always keep your driver disks close by, just in case they need to be reinstalled. Also you can obtain drivers for devices from most manufacturer websites as well as this site. Sometimes the manufactures update the drivers and allow the device to do more then it was made to do. They also update the drivers to fix bugs found after the product was shipped. If your having strange issues with any device, try updating the drivers before thinking its just bad.
